EFFORT IS NOT POWER: WHY HOMER KELLEY WAS RIGHT AND HOW PROPERGOLFING HAS FINALLY MADE HIS IDEAS USEFUL FOR THE MODERN GOLFER, SENIOR GOLFERS AND GOLFERS OVER 50
By Julian Mellor, ProperGolfing
Specialist in senior golf coaching, natural movement, and the Timeless Golf Swing
For years I’ve watched golfers try harder and harder to hit the ball further.
Especially golfers over 50.
They tighten their grip, they freeze their body, they swing faster with their hands… and the ball goes shorter.
It’s one of the biggest misunderstandings in golf.
And interestingly, it’s the same misunderstanding Homer Kelley wrote about in The Golfing Machine over 50 years ago.
Now, Kelley wrote in a very technical way. His book can be incredibly difficult to understand.
But buried in all that complexity was one simple truth that most golfers have never heard:

Effort is not power:
And this is exactly what we see every day in ProperGolfing.
In this blog, I want to explain what Kelley was trying to say, in simple English and how our modern, senior-friendly Timeless Golf Swing proves his insights with real-world data, real people, and hundreds of hours of measurable improvement.
What Homer Kelley Was Really Saying (In Simple Language)
Once you strip away the codes and engineering terms, Kelley’s message is surprisingly straightforward:
• Trying harder does not create speed
• You can’t swing faster than your body can naturally turn
• Tension and poor alignments waste energy
• Real speed comes when the club overtakes your hands naturally
That’s it.
No mystery.
No secret code.
And here’s the fascinating part…
Every single one of these points aligns perfectly with the changes we make in golfers at ProperGolfing, especially senior golfers.
How Kelley’s Theory Matches the Timeless Golf Swing
Below I’ll walk you through how Kelley’s ideas line up almost exactly with our three core principles:
Free-Flowing Motion, Coordinated Movement, and the Six-Second Finish.

This is where it gets interesting.
1. Effort ≠ Power
→ The Effort–Speed Paradox
Kelley said you can’t exceed your natural turning speed by trying harder.
In our coaching studio, we see this every day.
When golfers “try harder”:
• Their muscles tighten
• Their shoulders freeze
• Their arc shortens
• Their sequencing collapses
And when we get them to try less:
• They gain clubhead speed
• They free up their turn
• They strike the ball better
• They stop hitting at it
• The ball goes further
In fact, through our data from the Transformation Vault, we’ve measured an average +3.8 mph clubhead speed increase simply by reducing effort.
This is precisely what Kelley meant.
He saw it academically.
We’ve confirmed it in real life, with senior golfers who thought their best golf was behind them.

2. Mechanical Advantage
→ Free-Flowing Motion
Kelley used the phrase “mechanical advantage,” but what he really meant was this:
Let the club swing. Don’t try to hit it.
When the body turns freely and the hands stay soft, the club naturally “overtakes” and accelerates.
This is the foundation of the Timeless Golf Swing™:
• A smooth turn
• A free release
• Following the ball with the eyes (not forcing the head down)
• Finishing the swing for six seconds
When golfers stop interfering with the club, they immediately create more natural speed.
This is exactly what Kelley was trying to describe, but we’ve translated it into something anyone can feel within minutes.

3. Conflicting Alignments
→ Coordinated Movement
Kelley talked about the dangers of “conflicting alignments” when the body is positioned in a way that forces the golfer to waste energy correcting themselves mid-swing.
He was spot on.
Here are the biggest examples we fix every week:
• Straight lead arm = shoulder tension
• Keeping the head down = neck lock
• Pinned lead foot = blocked hip turn
• No hip turn = over-the-top move
• Rushed takeaway = disconnection
• Tight grip = no release
These are the exact reasons golfers lose distance and consistency as they age.
Our approach solves every one of these issues and it works because we focus on coordination first, not positions.

4. Maximum Turning Speed
→ Rhythm First
Kelley said you can’t push anything faster than you can naturally turn.
Again, he was right.
At ProperGolfing, rhythm has become one of our biggest discoveries.
We’ve shown that training with rhythm (55 BPM for most people) improves coordination three times faster than mechanical thinking.
When golfers swing with rhythm:
• The body leads
• The club follows
• The release happens naturally
• The hit disappears
• The speed returns
This is what Kelley meant by “overtaking,” but we’ve modernised it with drills, real footage, BPM training, and the Six-Second Finish to keep the body calm.
5. Kelley’s “Study 5-0”
→ The ProperGolfing Vault
Kelley’s most advanced section was about geometry, alignments, and tension.
The problem was: nobody understood it.
We’ve built the practical version Kelley never had:
The Proper Golfing Handbook
• Hundreds of tagged lessons in the Vault
• Before-and-after images
• Measured swing data
• Real senior golfer transformations
• Clear illustrations
• Simple drills
• A complete senior-friendly framework
Kelley built the theory.
We built the method.
The Truth Most Golfers Have Never Been Told
When you put everything together, Kelley and ProperGolfing are saying the same thing:
Homer Kelley:
“Effort is not power. Freedom creates speed.”
ProperGolfing:
“The harder you try, the slower you swing. Relax, move freely, and finish your swing.”
We’ve simply turned an academic theory into a method that any golfer over 50 can learn and feel in a matter of minutes.
Why This Matters So Much for Senior Golfers
Golfers over 50 often assume they are losing distance because of age.
But more often, they’re losing distance because of:
• Tension
• Restrictive positions
• Bad advice
• Fear of moving freely
• Trying too hard
When we remove those limitations, everything changes.
Sometimes in one lesson.
Sometimes in one swing.

We’ve had golfers gain 15, 20, even 40 yards, not because they worked harder, but because they stopped working hard.
This is the heart of the Timeless Golf Swing™.
ProperGolfing: The Modern Evolution of The Golfing Machine
To me, this is the most fascinating part of the whole subject:
Kelley built a complex mechanical model.
We built a simple, human model.
Both point to the same conclusion:
Golf becomes easier when the body moves naturally.
And that is why ProperGolfing works,
not just for elite players, but for real people, real seniors, and real golfers who want to enjoy the game more.
We’ve taken a brilliant idea from 60 years ago and made it:
• Simpler
• Clearer
• More enjoyable
• Proven
• Measurable
• Accessible to everyone
This is the Timeless Golf Swing™.
And it’s changing lives every day.
