why do golfers slice?
The most misunderstood shot in golf isn’t the slice. It’s the reason the slice happens.
Every day, somewhere in the world, a golfer watches another golf ball curve away to the right.
Some shake their heads. Some apologise to their playing partners. Some immediately search YouTube. Others buy another driver. Many blame themselves.
Almost all of them ask exactly the same question.
“What am I doing wrong?”
It seems like a sensible question.
Unfortunately — it is usually the wrong one.
The Biggest Mistake Golfers Make
Most golfers think a slice is the problem.
It isn’t.
A slice is simply the golf ball describing what happened at impact. Nothing more. Nothing less.
The golf ball isn’t trying to ruin your round. It isn’t choosing to go right. It isn’t being awkward.
It is simply obeying the laws of physics.
The golf ball only knows one thing. How the club arrived.
It doesn’t know your handicap. It doesn’t know how expensive your driver was. It doesn’t know how many lessons you’ve had. It doesn’t know what swing thought you’re trying today.
It only responds to the position, direction and movement of the club at the moment of impact.
That is why we say at ProperGolfing:
The Golf Ball Never Lies. It simply tells the truth.
The challenge is learning how to read what it is saying.
A Slice Is a Clue, Not a Diagnosis
Imagine going to your doctor because you have a cough.
A good doctor doesn’t simply say, “Here’s some cough medicine.”
They first ask — why are you coughing? An infection? An allergy? Asthma? A virus? Reflux?
The symptom is the same. The cause is completely different.
Golf is exactly the same.
A slice is not a diagnosis. It is a symptom. Different golfers slice for completely different reasons. That is why copying somebody else’s swing rarely works — you may be trying to solve a problem you don’t actually have.
The Question We Ask First
When a golfer visits ProperGolfing, we don’t begin by changing their swing.
We begin by asking a different question.
Why did that golf ball curve to the right?
Not — how do we stop it? Not yet.
First we need to understand the story the golf ball is telling us. Only then do we decide what needs to change.
This one question has shaped thousands of coaching sessions and has become one of the foundations of the Timeless Golf Swing®.
Because when you understand the cause — the solution becomes much simpler.
There Isn’t One Slice
This surprises many golfers. They think there is only one type of slice. There isn’t.
Some golfers start the ball left before it curves right. Some start it straight. Some start it right and watch it disappear even further right. Some produce a gentle fade. Others hit a full banana slice.
To the eye they all look similar. To a coach they can be completely different.
That is why trying random tips from the internet often creates more confusion. The ball flight may look the same. The underlying cause may be completely different.
What We Have Learned
After coaching thousands of golfers, one observation continues to appear.
Golfers rarely improve because they receive more information. They improve because someone identifies the right problem.
That is a huge difference.
Too much golf instruction tells golfers what to do. Very little helps golfers understand why they are producing the shot in the first place.
Our coaching begins with understanding. Because once you understand the cause — improvement becomes logical.
The Five ProperGolfing Patterns
At ProperGolfing we have found that most slices can usually be traced back to one or more of five recurring patterns.
Not five swing positions. Five patterns.
- 01Clubface Control
- 02Tension and Grip Pressure
- 03Coordination and Release
- 04Swing Path Direction
- 05Body Alignment
Every golfer is different. Some golfers have one dominant pattern. Others have two or three working together.
The purpose of coaching is not to force every golfer into the same swing. It is to identify which pattern is influencing your golf ball. That changes everything.
What Happens Next
Over the next sections we are going to explore each of these five patterns in detail. Not with complicated jargon. Not with confusing technical theories. But through clear explanations, practical coaching observations and real examples from thousands of lessons with golfers over 45.
By the end of this guide you will no longer see a slice as simply a bad shot.
You will see it for what it really is.
A message.
And once you can read that message — you are already much closer to hitting the golf ball the way you always hoped you could.
